August is a company that is unapologetically committed to equity, diversity and inclusion (ED&I). We believe that there are many entry points to this work - and we are proud that these entry points are spread across our organization. Our growing ED&I work is anchored by our Equity, Diversity & Inclusion team which sits at API.

Our core work is to create practices that are meant to improve how people, teams, and organizations work together to change themselves, the lives of the people they serve, their communities, and the world for the better. To do so, we take history into account and seek to undo systems that continue to marginalize women, people of color, LGBTQ communities, people with disabilities, immigrants and many other communities who represent our team and the communities we seek to be in allyship with.

As of January 2018, as a company we have committed to the following:

Equity. Equity is one of our company’s core values. We are fiercely committed to creating equal opportunity in the workplace for people regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, religion and economic background. When it comes to related policies, actions, and politics, we are inclined toward activism. When it comes to fiscal equity, As a benefit corporation, focused on purpose over profit, and intent on building a humane and dignified workplace, we have have designed a set of conditions for distributing equity to the team. Equity even at the expense of fast growth and ease of cultural affinity.

Diversity. We approach diversity with an explicit focus on dismantling racism and systemic oppression. We see this work as directly linked to how we develop our own company, how we build our core consulting business, and to how we will achieve our purpose . Our US business has made a commitment to racial diversity part of our core work because of the particular legacy of slavery, segregation and mass incarceration - we understand how deeply the legacy of these insidious systems continue to permeate institutions across the US. As a global company, we know that the best team is one in which cognitive, racial, gender, physical and class diversity are the rule - and not the exception. We are pursuing a number of avenues to deepen our commitment to diversity including ally groups for men (globally) and white folks (in the US), intentionally building a diverse team and encouraging all ‘Gustos to use their professional development budget to deepen their knowledge around diversity. Diversity even at the expense of familiarity and comfort.

Inclusion. We do all that we can for August to be radically inclusive - and in turn, the best place for all people to work. We have created participatory governance and self-organization systems that lean in to inclusion by design. Policies also uphold inclusion at August - from a parental leave policy that gives new parents the ability to care for their families, to trusting in ‘Gustos to work at times and locations that are optimal for them, to a mediation process to help us navigate conflict, inclusion is baked into our business. Inclusion even at the expense of absolute efficiency.
