Roles that will be elected by the sociocratic election process (outlined below): Team leads, representatives and facilitators. Scribe will be elected through a simple vote. All other roles will be filled by the lead of that team using the advice process.

Team leads, representatives and facilitators can only be elected by members of that team that has domain over filling that role (AKA to fill one of these roles, you have to be elected by other role holders on that team)

**Sociocratic Election Process**

OVERVIEW

The Sociocratic process for electing role-fillers contains seven steps that generally align with Integrative Decision-Making processes.

1. Present Role Description
2. Collect Nominations
3. Illumination Round
4. Information Gathering Round
5. Change Nominations Round
6. Nomination
7. Consent Round

WHEN TO USE THIS PROCESS

Role-filling is part of Governance. Add elections to the Emergent Agenda when you have data that role assignments should change, or when constitutionally mandated or consented terms have lapsed. When new roles are created, run this process as part of that Governance meeting.

FACILITATOR NOTES

* Take notes and be present – the process relies on you!
* Guides the group through the stages of the election process
* Actively prevent discussion or dialog
* Avoid asking for volunteers or who would be interested/not interested – we're looking for the role-filler to be decided by our best emergent wisdom, not by anchoring or social norms
* Capture nominations in a place that makes it easy for you to update nominations in the process
* Start the Consent Round next to the candidate so the candidate is asked last
* If there are more than one nominee, run multiple Consent Rounds
* The default number of role-fillers for any role is one, unless otherwise specified in governance.

PRESENT ROLE DESCRIPTION

The facilitator presents the consented description of the role, along with either the constitutionally mandated term (4 cycles) or another term consented-to by the team.

COLLECT NOMINATIONS

Each member of the group captures their desired candidate (or “no nomination” or “hire from the outside”) and either directly messages their nomination to the facilitator or offers it on a post-it.

ILLUMINATION ROUND

Prompt: “What are the reasons for selecting your candidate?”

The facilitator invites each member of the group to share the arguments in favor of their selected candidate.

INFORMATION GATHERING ROUND

Prompt: “Is there anything else you would like to share?”

In another round, the circle then shares comments and surfaces any important information for the team to consider in the Change Nominations Round.

CHANGE NOMINATIONS ROUND

Prompt: “Do you want to change your nomination? If so, please share the reason why.”

The facilitator amends members' nominations wherever they are tracking data from the election.

NOMINATION

The facilitator summarizes the nominations and the arguments and selects the candidate(s) with the strongest arguments for election, with no additional discussion by the group.

CONSENT ROUND

“Are there objections to electing … ?”
